FAQ:
Email help@vredu.cc for anything at all.
We would love to hear any and all ideas, feedback, and everything else! Simply email anyone from the VRedu team (help@vredu.cc).
Most likely not. Of course, if you don’t feel good or you’re feeling dizzy, take a break or stop using it altogether. Why is the risk so low of getting sick? Old VR systems didn’t have a high enough frame rate to keep you from getting motion sickness, but newer systems are much better. Also, when you walk around with your own feet, there is a much smaller chance of getting dizzy or sick (this is because your body ’sees’ motion in the headset, and also feels the very same motion as you walk — so your brain doesn’t get confused at all). If you teleport inside the app (using the laser/teleport tool), there is a slightly elevated risk of motion sickness, but it’s still quite low. That is, you ‘jump’ or ‘teleport’ instantaneously to another spot, which your brain can typically handle without getting confused. If you slide the board up and down or left and right, this typically does not make anyone dizzy because you yourself are not moving…only the board is moving. Now, if you use the pole to ‘pull’ yourself forward, backwards, left, ride, up, or down, there is a risk of getting dizzy, for some users. This is because your eyes are seeing you move but the rest of your body doesn’t sense any motion…which confuses your brain.
In summary, if you think you’ll feel dizzy (or you do feel a little dizzy), the best thing is to walk with your own feet and to slide the board content to you instead of trying to move yourself over to the board content. Also helpful is to teleport if you want to move a significant distance instead of just sliding the board to you.
You won’t need the controllers to use the VRedu tutoring application; the entire application uses hand tracking. You can use the controllers for all the other apps/games, however. They are fun! Make sure to try First Steps, which comes with the device (assuming you have permission from your supervisor).
Yes, each user engaging in the session will need a headset.
No problem! There is a video above about putting on the glasses spacer, see video #12 above.
We are currently using all of the standard avatars that Meta lets developers use. We can and will (at some point) allow you full customization of your avatar, but right now it makes you look sort of creepy to the other person. Also, remember that you will never see yourself -- it’s only what the other person is going to see, and most of the time you’re looking at the content (not each other) anyway. But yes, we will certainly expand the avatar experience in the near future.
All you need is for each person to be on a WiFi network, anywhere in the world. You do not have to be on the same WiFi network. Just remember to always bring the power cord wherever you go, so you can charge the device between sessions.
To turn the device on, press the power button on the side of the device. If the device is asleep, just press it once. If it’s completely off, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until you hear the chime.
To turn the device off, either press and hold the power button for three seconds to automatically power the headset off, whether it is on or off your head. You will know the device is turned off when you hear the chime. Alternatively, if the device is on your head, press the power button once, which will bring up three options: Restart, Power Off, Cancel. You can pinch with hand tracking to select any of these options, or press the power button once more to power the device off.
Not at all. The application can be used individually, or with another person. Ideally, tutors and students go into the room early, to prepare the room. One person can be there, by themselves, as long as they want...and another person can join at any time. You can also go back into the room after your session is over, to review the material.
Right now: no, you use a simple 4-digit userID that is provided by your institution just for the purposes of this project. Since the devices are being shared between multiple users at a school, each user will need to put in their 4-digit code upon opening the app so that the system can reload your settings and preferences (including your “My Files” that you may have added from Google Drive). The most important reason is for the ‘Recent Rooms’ feature - we want you to be able to get into a room very quickly and easily...without having to remember a 7-digit room code.
In the future: yes, you might use your school credentials instead of the 4-digit code. We would love your ideas on how to make this as simple as possible (see question #1 above). For example, perhaps you could go on your phone and beam a code to the headset and then just put that code into your phone -- thus authenticating you.
You can login to google drive directly in the app and add any PDFs to your files.
First, make sure your controllers are on the ground or on a table, if they are in your hands, they will override hand tracking. Next, clap your hands once or snap your fingers. Any movement helps the cameras pick up your hands. Finally, make sure you aren’t in low light. If you still have a problem, contact Portia and Rachel (see question #1 above). If your hands are disappearing, see videos #8 and #11 above about tips for hand tracking; it is likely that the cameras are having trouble seeing all of your fingers, which leads to the device questioning if your hand is a hand or not.

New Updates in this version:
Version 24.0 (released 11/10/21 early morning)
New Updates in this version:
Version 23.0 (released 8/4/21 early morning)
New Updates in this version:
1. Enhancement: After many requests, we have added text boxes into the app, which you can add to the board. You will find the text box tool in the Basic Tools menu on your Tools Palette. Simply tap the text box tool on the Tools Palette, and then tap the board where you would like to place the text box. A keyboard will automatically appear below the text box for you to type.
2. Enhancement: You can now grab PDFs with one hand to move them around on the board.
When you close your fist around a PDF (which is stuck to the board), you will see your hand glow with a blue outline to show that you are grabbing the PDF. You can now move your hand around on the board to move the PDF around. When you release your fist, the PDF will stay where you leave it.
3. Enhancement: You can now resize PDFs by grabbing them with two hands. When you close your fists around the PDF (which is stuck to the board), you will see your hands glow with blue outlines to show that you are grabbing the PDF. You can now move your hands closer together to shrink the PDF or move them further apart to make the PDF larger.
4. Enhancement: You can now delete PDFs, text boxes, and other objects on the board by pressing the small trash can button which will appear when your hand is close to the object in question. A pop up will appear to confirm your decision before the file is deleted.
5. Big fix: The issue where writing with the marker was sometimes smoothing too much (and losing some of the detail of a drawing) has now been fixed.
6. Bug fix: The issue where the laser pointer sometimes did not work on the right hand side has now been fixed.
Version 22.0 (released 7/21/21 early morning)
New Updates in this version:
1. Enhancement: We have added a brand new gesture for movement, providing a much easier way to move around. To move around with this gesture, make the "rock star" gesture that you previously used to bring up the Movement Pole, but do this with your index & pinky fingers pointing in the direction you want to move (with your palm down). You can see this gesture demonstrated in this 30 second video clip HERE. Don't worry, the movement pole is still included in the app until we perfect this gesture. We would love your feedback on which option you prefer!
2. Enhancement: A substantial improvement to both 2D & 3D writing, which makes writing much more smooth. Again, we would love your feedback when you get a chance to try this out!
3. Enhancement: A new tool in the Settings menu called Height Settings, which allows you to adjust your avatar's height up and down. You can set your height to one of 10 height settings. This means that the Movement Pole is now only used to move your avatar forward, backwards, left and right (i.e. not up and down), which makes it much easier to control.
4. Enhancement: We have added a Bug Reporting tool to each page of the user palette. You will see an icon of a bug inside a magnifying glass on the bottom right of each page in the palette. If you experience a bug, pressing this button will send a report to us of your experience, so that we can check it out and fix the problem.
5. Enhancement: We have changed the Thickness Slider for Markers & Erasers for 3 options of thickness: Thin, Medium and Thick. Try these out and let us know what you think.
Version 21.0 (released 7/7/21 early morning)
New Updates in this version:
1. Enhancement: A redesigned Google Drive integration, making it much easier and faster to access your PDF files within VRedu.
A folder view just like you are used to in Google Drive has been added, making the tool much easier to navigate. Files highlight in grey when selected, making it clear which file you have selected, and a 'click' sound has been added as each button is selected. You can now use the "back" button on the keyboard to go back a page in the webview, and you can scroll up and down with the up and down arrows on the keyboard too.
To access your Google Drive, access the “Files” menu item on the top line of icons in your Tools Palette, and then the “Goggle Drive” tool (the left-most icon on the second row of icons in your Tools Palette). This will open a webpage on your Tools Palette where you can navigate to sign into your Google account and choose PDF files to upload to VRedu.
2. Enhancement: A redesigned Board Customization page of the Tools palette, making it much more intuitive to switch between a blackboard or a whiteboard (or any shade of gray in between), and to add, remove or change the color of the gridlines or dots on the board.
3. Enhancement: We have rewritten each of the "Question Mark" menus on each of the Tool Palette pages, with clear instructions of how to use the tools on each page of the Palette. To check the instructions for any page, press the question mark icon at the bottom right of the Tool Palette and the instructions will display above the palette.
4. Bug fix: Several issues where users are unable to see or hear each other upon first entry have been fixed.
Version 20.0 (released 6/22/21 early morning)
New Updates in this version:
1. Enhancement: Several improvements to Google Drive, to make it easier for users to
access and bring their files into VRedu. Some of these fixes include: fonts are bigger, the back button is bigger to navigate back a page, scrolling on the tools palette is easier.
2. Enhancement: The Timer tool in the Utilities page on the Tool Palette now has 2 minutes set by default, to set a quick timer to quiz a student.
3. Bug fix: The issue where users are sometimes kicked out of the VRedu room as another user enters or leaves the VRedu room has now been fixed.
4. Bug fix: The issue where users could sometimes see their own hands or other users hands through objects has now been fixed.
5. Bug fix: The issue where icons did not light up correctly as tools were selected has now been fixed.
Version 19.0 (released 5/25/21 early morning)
New Updates in this version:
1. Enhancement: Size icons added to the marker line thickness slider to demonstrate which end is "thin" and "thick" on the slider.
2. Enhancement: The laser pointer now stops on objects rather than shining through them.
3. Enhancement: The vector arrows on the pole for movement have been improved, so that there is now an arrow in all 6 of the directions that a user can move by using the pole.
4. Bug fix: The issue where users were able to accidentally teleport beyond the board has now been fixed.
5. Bug fix: The issue where a user's hands appear to be positioned incorrectly after they recenter the application (by holding their thumb and index finger on their left hand together) has been fixed.
Version 18.0 (released 5/18/21)
New Updates in this version:
1. Enhancement: A better icon for the laser pointer and teleport tool (found floating above your ring finger, activated by holding your thumb and ring finger together), to make this tool more easily recognizable.
2. Enhancement: Teleporting has been made much easier & faster. Instead of waiting for the "Touch to Teleport" button to appear, you now just point your laser pointer on the floor where you want to go, wait 3 seconds for the spinner to complete the circle, and then you will teleport automatically. This will allow users to move more quickly through the room. Let me know what you think!
3. Enhancement: There are vector arrows on the pole for movement (generated by doing the gesture shown inside the icon on your inner wrist) to remind users how to grab and use this pole. Let me know if you find this helpful!
4. Enhancement: We have added more light to the rooms to make 3D shapes and objects stand out more against dark backgrounds.
5. Enhancement: We have added Jazz music to the music list, found under Audio Settings in the Settings menu. Let me know what else you'd like to hear!
6. Bug fix: The issue where users are kicked from the room upon a second user joining has been improved. Please let me know if you continue to experience this issue and we will work with you to solve it!
7. Bug fix: Several small fixes to the calculator: replacing "PI" with π in calculator results; removing the requirement to use parenthesis when calculating functions including PI (eg 5π now works); and "ans" button is now the same color as other buttons and shows correctly in the equations when typed; backspace deletes the whole function, not individual letters (eg "log" backspaces completely, not just to "lo"); all letters are lower case & the same size.
8. Bug fix: The issue where the brightness slider didn't change the room brightness much at the lower end of the slider has been fixed.
9. Bug fix: The issue where the environment sometimes changed unprompted has now been fixed.
Version 17.0 (released 5/11/21)
New Updates in this version:
1. Enhancement: You are now able to un-select a Shape Sticker (found in the Object Tools menu) or Emoji Sticker (found in the Social Tools menu) by tapping that same sticker again on the palette, to put it back where it came from. Reminder: Check out feature of the week for another way to do this.
2. Enhancement: The STOP button on Celebrations has been moved to underneath the Celebrations buttons, rather than in the middle of the Celebrations button.
3. Bug fix: Recent Rooms sometimes not displaying in the Lobby has now been fixed.
4. Bug fix: PDF files sometimes appearing underneath previously drawn marker lines on the board has now been fixed.
5. Bug fix: Pressing stop on a celebration sometimes stopping the celebration for one user but not the other has been fixed.
